- run the EW20 programme
- get the kids to learn new vocabulary
- make sure the kids understand the words learnt
- check their written work and correct their spelling
On the same day, i need to run:
- ICTL programme
- ensure the kids know how to operate the computer
- show them the available office applications
- conduct a 'hands-on' learning and provide assistance
As stated by Rod Bolitho(one of UK famous educationalist), we need to look at CAF(consider-all-factors) for the things we plan. My CAFs are as follows:
- we have 236 children
- the school has only TWO English teachers
- the RMT candidates are to have their supplements at 7.00 a.m (the time when EW20 officially starts )
- the EW20 module is just a repetition of grammar exercises and the module needs to be photostated FUNDED by the teacher
Last year, what we do was the module i created (an ad-hoc option for i am a 'fresh' grad) which taken from scripts of nursery rhymes, poems, short stories for the kids to have fun with the language. From my point of view, the kids have little exposure to different types of English texts apart from a linear version they learn in the classroom. Yet, the upperhands hear no reasons for such ideals and insist that we should run the 'normal' EW20 practice.
The past 4 years, i was taught that language should be nurtured and learnt in a non-threatening way. There was ample chance to get the kids worked up with the 'ALIEN' language, if we consistently add up their joy and interest as we teach them.
If we rigidly restricted ourselves to follow only one of the above practice, we shall miss the fruitful feedback that may benefited our students. There is no single, best practice in teaching for teaching is not an island. Such statement also suggests that teachers are free to mix and match the best practices aligned with their students needs and interests. This, in my opinion, is a symbiotic process for it breaks the boredom of the conventional,one-way teaching that is widely operates around the nation.
hmm...what kind of things that excite you to learn English??:)
